PALMETTO BUGS

Palmetto Bugs

When living in Florida bugs of any kind are just a fact of life. Although the Palmetto bug is supposed to live outside it is not uncommon for them to wander into someone's home. Luckily there are ways to stop them and give you a bug-free life. The Palmetto bug generally enters a home in unexpected ways. Your windows and doors are not their entry point. Your sink, shower, and bathtub drains are their entry point. On most occasions they will not enter your home because your drains are filled with water. The part of your drain called the 'trap' usually has water in it to prevent sewer gas from invading your home. But when a drain is not used often enough, the water will dry up and palmetto bugs will find their way into your home.

How To Stop Them

The most obvious way to prevent Palmetto bugs from coming in is to run your water in each fixture. This includes all the fixtures you normally don't use like the guest bathroom, shower, etc. But this can be a serious problem for those who don't live in Florida year round. "Snow birds" generally only live in Florida for a few months out of the year. While they are gone the water in their drains dry up and Palmetto bugs make themselves at home.

To stop this from happening you can do a number of things. The first thing you can do is to pour a half cup of baby oil or mineral oil into your drains. This works well because these oils don't evaporate as quickly and can give you peace of mind for months. Another factor is your toilet. This water will also evaporate if it is not used regularly. To solve this problem put plastic food wrap over the bowl to seal it up and prevent nuisance pests from entering.

Mechanical vents are the last key to preventing Palmetto bugs. Not all homes will have these. Some traditional homes will have them and the majority of manufactured homes will have them. A mechanical vent helps with the flow of water in your pipes. These help to prevent Palmetto bugs but most people are not aware that they can wear out. Luckily, mechanical vents are extremely cheap and easy to replace. Be sure to switch them out every three to five years and ensure yourself of a bug-free home.

If you follow these steps above you can stop Palmetto bugs in their tracks. Whether you are a Florida resident or a "snow bird" give yourself the comfort of knowing that your home is bug free. Universal Pest Control prides themselves on giving you this comfort. Put these tips into play and enjoy sunny Florida in peace.
